As I neared my goal weight and healthy BMI for the first time in my adult life, my husband grumbled, “Why couldn’t I motivate you to get healthy but your gym buddies can?” I’ve thought about that question many times in the four months since the beginning of this journey. The short answer is, “Because they know what I need.” Where everything else has failed, the support of my “loser friends” has been the key to real, lasting changes in my lifestyle.
Last May, I began a “Biggest Loser” contest never really imagining that this time, everything about losing weight and getting fit would finally click. During the official contest, Sara and Carrie taught us about nutrition, exercise, changing habits, and overall health. It was the kick I needed to lose 11% of my body weight. However, without the magic of the women who became my “loser friends”, I would never be at this place 8 months later: 30 pounds lighter, grain-free, capable of running 9 miles without stopping, and able to do 15 atomic push-ups (and who knows how many of those insane burpees, squats, and flying Dutchmen!) To think, a year ago, I never knew what a tabata was…
After the official contest, a few of us decided to continue with a more intense version of the Biggest Loser. I called us the “extra biggest losers”. Sara asked us to journal: Logging our food intake, planning daily exercise, and exploring our belief systems about food. We exchanged recipes and food weekly. Twice a week, we weighed-in then sweat together through high intensity cardio intervals and heavy lifting. There were countless times when the only reason I went to the gym was because I was committed to this group. Along the way these strong, beautiful women became my encouragement, support system and inspiration.
When my mind tells me all I want to do is sit on the couch, my support system is a Facebook message away, reminding me how and why I got to this place. Support from these friends is the best combination of Body and Soul!
