It’s funny how day by day nothing changes. But when you look back, everything is different…” – C.S. Lewis.
Today I celebrated my 27th birthday (eek that’s another year closed to 30!) and took a few minutes to reflect on what has changed over the past year and more recently. A year ago today I kicked off my day with a full spin class at Body & Soul inclusive of a ride to (I believe Prince or Michael Jackson’s rendition of) Happy Birthday. The picture on Facebook reminds me of the feeling of exhaustion and exhilaration that I experienced that morning as I was still relatively new to spin at that point.
I didn’t go to a spin class today. However, when 4:30 came this afternoon, I knew where I was headed. I was on my way home to lace up my running shoes and hit the trail. Although today turned out not to be a good day for a run physically (I didn’t drink enough water or fuel my body appropriately during the day), I know that running is a new way to experience the feeling of exhaustion and exhilaration that I had a year ago (and continue to have). On the surface it feels like nothing has changed from last year but down deep, a lot has changed! I am now a runner! Today doesn’t really feel different from the first day I wrote a blog, but today I’m able to run longer intervals (two 10 minute intervals – getting crazy!), further distances, sleep better and overall feel better both physically and mentally. Don’t get me wrong, there have been awesome highs and the lowest of lows that felt like they would never end, but it’s all about riding the wave and remembering to be kind to myself.
A lot of is get stuck in our daily routines and feel like our lives aren’t changing and maybe aren’t being fulfilled. I encourage you to take a look back…I bet things are different…something has changed, improved or allowed you to feel full! Has running changed your life?
